Overqualified but Undervalued

Making Your Leadership Contribution Visible

You have earned the degrees, led teams, and delivered results. Yet the responsibilities, recognition, or opportunities available to you may fall short of what your experience supports. That disconnect can leave you questioning how to move forward.

Strong performance matters, but it does not always make your leadership contribution visible to the people making decisions. Executive presence can help you communicate that contribution with clarity and authority. It cannot guarantee recognition or resolve unfair workplace practices on its own.

Communicate the Value of Your Work

Executive presence extends beyond speaking in a boardroom. It includes how you explain your judgment, connect your work to organizational priorities, and participate in decisions.

When presenting an idea, state your recommendation, the reasoning behind it, and the outcome it supports. Give enough context to inform the decision without feeling that you must repeatedly defend your right to contribute.

Move Beyond Overperformance

Taking on more work is not always the most useful response to being overlooked. Before accepting another responsibility, clarify its purpose, scope, and relationship to your development goals.

Make your existing contribution visible through specific examples. Identify the challenge, the action you took, and the result. Acknowledge shared work while accurately describing your role.

Make the Development Conversation Specific

If you are seeking greater responsibility, ask what criteria guide that decision. Discuss how your experience aligns with those criteria, what preparation may still be needed, and when progress will be reviewed.

For organizational leaders, clear advancement criteria, consistent feedback, and fair recognition help ensure that contribution is evaluated beyond who speaks the loudest.

Your Next Step

Choose one conversation where your contribution needs to be understood more clearly. Prepare a concise statement covering what you delivered, why it mattered, and the opportunity or support you are seeking next.

Your experience gives you a foundation to build on. Use it to communicate with confidence, ask focused questions, and make informed decisions about where you can contribute and grow.
